From the roads getting there is a little confusing but they do have a few signs to help guide you in the right direction. Basically on the cliffs of a mountain this public course has spectacular views of snow capped mountains, and surrounding Salt Lake City area.

The clubhouse and restaurant are well designed so you can get in and out and back on the course quickly. They normally have a discount rack of golf clothing and accessories which make it very easy to get something on sale. If you need any equipment they have a good inventory to choose from.

It’s quite amusing how when you are entering the clubhouse parking lot you think you’re parking at a restaurant. Because it’s impossible to see any part of the golf course since it is completely on the side of the mountain. Once in the pro-shop you can see a few holes, and the practice putting green.

Now in our experiences public golf course rarely have driving ranges that at memorable. But at South Mountain Golf Course you will soon forget other driving ranges you have used. When you hit balls it will be tuff for you to follow the ball, since you find yourself staring off into the distance at the snow capped mountains and other scenic views.

The drive from the clubhouse to the driving range and 1st tee is quite long; the course is pretty spread out overall, but is very easy to find your way around. There is nothing more frustrating than finishing a hole and not knowing where to go to next, or finding yourself at the wrong hole. South Mountain is easy to navigate through you will have no problems getting hole to hole.

Each hole at South Mountain is uniquely named; our favorite was “Pipe Dream� which is a very tuff par 3. They were very creative the holes some are quite comical. One is even called “Cross Winds�, which gives you a huge hind at to what to look out for on that hole.

Overall South Mountain was one of our favorite courses in the Salt Lake City area of Utah, but there were a few things that we didn’t like about the course. First thing was the quality of their sand, very course and hard, with fairly large pebbles. It is very tuff to get out of with a standard open club face shot, and will chew up your clubs. The second thing was the fact they don’t have a cart GPS map offer a course guide or map. But they do offer a distance GPS that you can rent for your round, it doesn’t give you a map, but it does give you distances.
