Coyote Hills Glow Ball Moonlit Golf Tournament

There will be a Orange County Glow Ball Golf Tournament on November 19th (11/19/11).

Orange County Glow Ball Golf Tournament 2011

Friday November 14th 2008

Coyote Hills Golf Course had it’s first annual "Glow Ball Golf Tournament". Tee-off was at 6:30pm on a night with a Full Moon.

At first you might think…."Golf at Night?!?"

Yup! It was quite fun!

The tournament was 2 Man Best Ball, 9 hole shotgun start, on the back 9. Each player was given 2 glow golf balls, and could buy 1 more. Three balls maximum for each player. If a player lost all three balls, then they were out, or at least could not qualify for any prizes awarded in the tournament.

At first most golfers signing in were worried they would loose 3 balls easily and be done. But it turned out, you really had to shank one to loose it. Since the balls glow very bright, you can find the ball even if it was deep in the bushes.

How hard was it ??

Well, at first it was quite difficult to get good contact. It’s a but hard to square up the club face and also judge height, distance, etc. But after 15-20 minutes, your eyes adjust much more, the moon got higher and brighter in he sky and it was much easier.

Some golfers claimed, "I never want to play in sunlight again, only moonlight", others whom had fun, but fell apart in the dark, (our group did on 3 holes).

How did the golf ball perform ??

Most golfers we talked to said about "2 Clubs" or 15% to 20% less distance. But once playing short game, the balls seem less different than a real ball. Putting was a bit awkward, the ball seem to have more bounce of the putter face.

How was it set-up ??

  • Small glowing pumpkins lit the tee box markers (mostly all front tees to shorten holes).
  • Red Glow sticks in the middle of the fairway, every so often to help "guide you".
  • Each flag had a flashing glow top, to show you the position
  • Each cup had a bright glow bracelet inside to help you chip and putt.
  • Each golfer got a few glow sticks to wear or place on golf bag to help show other golfers where they were on the course.

PROS

  • It was a whole lot of fun!
  • It was a night all the players will always remember
  • The buffet dinner before the round was excellent
  • And as always the customer service from the Coyote Hills Staff was amazing

CONS

  • Hard to judge distance on shots
  • Hard to tell how far the golfers in front of you really are
  • Had to sign a safety waiver. (but it’s understandable, your playing golf at night)

What would we change about it ??

Probably not much, one thing for sure, would be to change how the holes were marked for distance at night.

They did have red glow sticks as a basic guide but, we would suggest having the standard blue, white, and red markers for 200, 150, & 100 yardage markers.

We think it might help give players distances on shots and also help players see how far golfers in front of them really are. No one wants to hit into the group ahead.

Bottom line…

It should be held "Quarterly", or "Monthly" not "Annually". Who wants to wait a whole year to play in the next "Coyote Hills Glow Ball Golf Tournament"?

Guess we will all have to wait !!

This tournament was fully booked a week in advance, with a long waiting list. If you plan to go the next one make sure to sign-up early.

We would like to take a moment and really thank Coyote Hills for being brave enough to open their night time tournament to the public, and putting on a great evening.

Your 2007 Johnnie Walker Cambodia Open Champion, Bryan Saltus.

A hearty congratulations to Bryan for a wonderful finish to a strong year on the Asian Golf Tour. At one off the lead going into the final day Bryan got a birdie on the first hole to take the lead. He never looked back from there finishing with a -17 for the four rounds for a 3 stroke win. On the 18th hole of the final day he had a 4 stroke lead.

Before signing his score card and accepting the troph

Jokes are just jokes so you can’t get offended. This golf joke was emailed to us, so we figured we should share it !

It is a really funny poke at Tiger !!

God asks Arnie first : “What do you believe ?”

Arnie thinks long and hard, looks God in the eye, and says : “I believe in hard work, and in staying true to family and friends. I believe in giving. I was lucky, but I always tried to do right by my fans.”

God can’t help but see the essential goodness of Palmer, and offers him a seat to his left.

Then God turns to Nicklaus and says : “What do you believe ?”

Jack says, “I believe passion, discipline, courage and honor are the fundamentals of life. I, too, have been lucky, but win or lose, I’ve always tried to be a true sportsman, both on and off the playing fields.’”

God is greatly moved by Jack’s high-pitched eloquence, and he offers him a seat to his right.

Finally, God turns to Woods : “And you, Tiger, what do you believe ?”

Tiger replies : “I believe you’re in my seat.” :-p

Are reusable golf tees worth it ?

Are reusable golf tees worth the extra money ? Or are they just a gimmick !

Compaired to “Old Reliable” the standard wooden golf tee that is a dime-a-dozen.

Variety of different reusable golf tees

Above are three different types of reusable golf tees, ranging from the Brush Tee, Zero Friction Tee, and the newer Flexie-T.

We wanted to see how they compare to the standard wooden golf tee; in veristilaty, use, and reliablitly.

We took time to play with all of them and we have seen that there are differences. The tees biggest differences were in their versitility, not being able to accomidate for difference club head sizes, from irons and woods to drivers. Even though you can buy different size reuseable tees, it just means spending more money.

But, we also can’t fully base our opinion on that only, so we are breaking it up in to two seperate results.

  • Best over all tee – category covers all tee box situations irons, woods, hybrids, and drivers.
  • Best driving tee – category is only covering driving tees. (coming soon)

Australian golfers have kangaroo hazards

Depending on where you play golf the hazards can vary from big sand traps or bunkers to "beachfront" water hazards lining a side of a fairway.

But some courses have "regulars" or "natives" that you have to watch out for. By that we mean mother nature, some mountain courses you have to watch out for bears, some bobcats or lynx, and even snakes !

At Coyote Hills golf course you have to watch out for, both snakes and squirrels. Signs say not to look for your ball in certain out-of-bounds areas because the possibility of poisonous rattle snakes.

Then the squirrels, the seem to plan ambushes to steal your snacks or lunch right off your golf cart. You park your cart by the green and once you go to putt they attack your cart and run off into the woods with your food.

"Sun City Golf Course" in Australia, you have kangaroo hazards !

Not that they will attack you, or poison you, but they might try and steal food from you. The kangaroos seem to coexist on the course and create a great atmosphere.

Sun City Country Club is one of the top ten courses in Western Australia, and has also made it on the list of the top 50 golf courses in Australia nationwide.

For more information on this course you can visit there website, or visit them just a 15 minute drive from Mindarie.

Tustin Ranch golf desktop wallpapers

Here are some great photos of Tustin Ranch golf course in Orange County California. These were 3 of our favorite images. Tustin Ranch is very high end course for Southern California, and is quite expensive, but worth it if you have it, and worth it to splurge, if you don’t !!

Above you can see 2 greens over the water, from were the picture was taken the green on the right is the green in play for that hole. The water hazards at this course are very abundant and can be seen in each of our free desktop wallpapers for Tustin Ranch.

The picture above and to the left, is a par 3 hole that you have to shoot over the fountain, and can be very tough to keep it on the green with it’s false front and bunkers.

Then to the right is a longer hole that you need to carry the water to make the fairway. You can see more images and read our full review of Tustin Ranch golf course.

Three putting games to help with ball control

You drive for show and putt for doe !” This just about covers it, just missing the fairway, ruff, and bunkers and water that make up the round. But the quickest way to lower your score is “lowering your putts“.

Getting down to 2 putts max per green is key !

If you could only putt once each hole, well anyone would settle for that. It’s the greens that end up with 3 or more putts that will keep you struggling to lower your handicap.

When you are practicing putting alone you can gain confidence with this tip, or even try to only use one ball, you might pay attention more and concentrate on each putt since you know you have to walk and get it.

But if you are practicing with others or at least one other person, you can try these three putting practice games.

  1. Closest short to win : So you try and work on control of your distance and leave the ball short but still trying to be as close as possible.
  2. Closest past to win : Again working on your control of the ball you want to pass the cup and leave it long, staying as close as you can.
  3. Make the putt to win : Well this one is pretty obvious, just make the putt first to win, you can play “Best out of 5″ and loser buys drinks or snacks ;-)
